Once more, Friends’ volunteers have had the benefit of getting the help of Chorley Council’s small team of Rangers’ staff – people with specialist skills and knowledge in a wide range of practical, environmental tasks.
Keeping the paths in the Park free draining and mud free can be a tricky task. Especially this time of year when heavy rain and falling leaves can quickly turn path surfaces muddy as they are walked on. Surprisingly just scraping the paths of lying mud down to their crushed stone base, can be enough for them to dry out and allow any wind to blow away fallen leaves off the surface.
However, a better solution is to also apply a layer of fine stone chippings to a scraped path, that creates a near-surface drainage layer. Pictured below are Friends’ members and Rangers working on the path next to Rectory Close, along with the result of their efforts.
