Following a suggestion made by Britain in Bloom judges when inspecting the Sensory Garden in 2022, the Friends decided that a valuable feature to improve biodiversity in Astley Park would be a specially built home for insects and other ‘creepy crawlies’.

The following year Maurice Houghton, our Vice-chair at the time, took on the task of building the Bug House and decided to mainly construct it out of old wooden pallets.

The Base Layers
Taking Shape

Pupils from St. Georges C of E Primary School collected old canes, fir cones and bricks etc. and stuffed these materials in the open voids in the Bug House structure. A wire mesh front was then added to hold all the contents in place. A substantial structure was created approximately 1 metre wide and 1.5 metres high. More a bug mansion than just a house!
